The Core of the Good News

Here’s the Gospel in a nutshell: Jesus, God’s Son, was born of a virgin, lived a perfect, sinless life for 33 years, and spent three years in ministry working miracles: healing the sick, giving sight to the blind, raising the dead and showing God’s power.

He was crucified by the “religious leaders” of the day who called Him a blasphemer. However, this was no accident, it was God’s plan to forgive our sins. On the third day after he was crucified, Jesus rose from the dead, appeared to His apostles, taught hundreds over a period of forty days, and then ascended to Heaven, where He’s preparing a place for those who follow Him.

Jesus’ death on the cross was the ultimate game-changer. God is perfect, and we’re … well, not. No amount of good deeds can make us perfect enough to be in relation with a perfect God. But Jesus, being perfect, took our place, and His sacrifice bridges the gap, letting us connect with a holy God. Without Him, we’re stuck; with Him, we’re free to know God personally.

Bottom line: Jesus saves us. We can’t save ourselves.

Where a lot of Believers go wrong is when they share this good news it’s muddied with their own religious agendas (That’s religion). It’s almost like they believe that they are the ones “winning souls,” when they’re not, We can’t. That’s like thinking we’re steering the sun or something. When it comes to saving souls, Jesus does the heavy lifting. Our job? Share His story and step aside.

Sure, we all want to make a difference, right? Let your life shine with the fruit of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. That’s how you show the world who Jesus is, through actions that scream love louder than words.

Why Jesus Stands Out

You’ve probably heard folks say, “All religions are the same,” or “Just be a good person, and you’re set.” But let’s think about it: If you were God, wanting to bring your people back to you, would you make the path a maze or a straight road?

Most belief systems say you’ve got to earn your way to God, follow the rules, perform the rituals, be “good enough,” and MAYBE you’ll make the cut. But who’s perfect? Nobody. I know I’m not. That leaves us chasing an impossible standard, wondering if you’ve done enough, prayed enough etc..

In ancient times, people offered sacrifices for the forgiveness of sins. They would sacrifice animals, crops, you name it, hoping to get forgiveness for their mistakes. It was usually animals because that was the main currency of the day. However, it was all about giving the very best you had, in faith, so God would see your efforts and forgive your sins.

One day God had enough of that and flipped the script. God didn’t wait for us to figure it out, He sent Jesus, His sinless Son, to be the final sacrifice. God sent HIS very best for us as a final sacrifice once and for all.

On the cross, Jesus said, “It is finished,” (John 19:30) and it was done. No more striving, no more guessing. Our belief in Jesus, His life, death, and resurrection, and we’re forgiven, made right with God. This is why it’s called “The Gospel” (that means “the good news”).

You don’t have to clean up first or prove your worth. It’s like God’s saying, “I’ve got you. Just come as you are.” That’s what sets Christianity apart: it’s not about what you do, it’s about what Jesus already did.

Love Over Legalism

Following Jesus isn’t about nailing a checklist of religious dos and don’ts or flashing Bible verses to prove you’re the “right” kind of Christian. It’s about love, loving God with everything you’ve got and loving others the way Jesus loves you.

Jesus didn’t just talk the talk, He showed us how by hanging out with the people society wrote off: liars, thieves, prostitutes, tax collectors. He didn’t roll up to their homes preaching The Problem with Religion

Here’s the kicker: Jesus wasn’t about religion. Religion is what people built around Him, sinful humans taking His simple truth and dividing people into systems, sects, and religions. Today, you’ve got groups saying, “Worship this way,” or “Use this Bible version,” “God only loves certain people,” each claiming they’ve cracked the code. Some even throw shade at other believers or shame unbelievers for not fitting their mold.

Jesus despised that nonsense. In fact, He hated it so much, it was religion that got Him killed. The Pharisees, the religious big shots of His day, worshipped their rules, not the living God standing before them. They clung to their “sacred texts,” using them to control people through fear, not love. They’d tell you you’re doomed if you didn’t follow their exact interpretation.

Sound familiar?

Jesus faced these guys head-on. They’d grill Him with gotcha questions: Is divorce okay? What about taxes? Can you heal on the Sabbath? Every time, He cut through their legalism, pointing to the heart of the matter, love, compassion, forgiveness.

Like when they asked, “What’s the greatest commandment?” He didn’t quote a rule we must follow; He said, “Love God with all your heart, soul, and mind… and love your neighbor as yourself”

Or when the “religious leaders” pitched a hissy-fit about the Sabbath, He said the Sabbath is for helping people, not chaining them down to religious legalism. (Mark 2:27)

Jesus called these religious rule-worshippers “hypocrites,” “liars” and “snakes” because they completely missed the point, God’s heart and love. And they killed Him for it, choosing their religious system over the living Messiah.

Picture Jesus walking into the roughest parts of town, places where folks cuss, fight, and live rough lives. Did He say, “Nah, Matthew’s too shady,” or “That guy’s not baptized yet”? Nope. He met them in their world, loved them fiercely, and something wild happened, they loved Him back.

They wanted more of His words, and to understand His way of life. They followed Him, not because He laid down the law, but because His love was magnetic. This is the blueprint that so many Christians have lost sight of. Live out love, joy, peace, and all those fruits of the Spirit. That’s what draws people to Jesus, not arguments over religions or judgment, but a life that radiates His heart.

Imagine This: Jesus walks into a church today, preaching love over their rigid rules. Would most religious folks cheer or would they clutch to their traditions like the Pharisees did?

Here’s where it really gets good: You don’t have to let religion’s baggage discourage you. Following Jesus means keeping your eyes on Him, not man-made divisions and religions. That’s why Jesus said: “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” (John 14:6)

Walking “The Way”

Back in the day, Jesus’ followers weren’t called Christians, they were “Followers of the Way.” They didn’t have the New Testament yet, just the Old Testament pointing to Jesus’ fulfilled prophecies. There were a few letters floating around, but no New Testament.

Their faith wasn’t tied to a list of doctrines, it was Jesus Himself. They loved Him, shared His message, and lived it out. Take the thief on the cross: no baptism, no rule-following, just faith in Jesus, and he was promised paradise. (Luke 23:42,43).

That’s the beauty of it, Jesus meets you where you are. You don’t need to be perfect or know every verse. Watch out for folks who say you’re not a “real Christian” unless you follow their specific Bible, worship style, or rules. That’s the kind of thinking Jesus shut down. It builds walls, not bridges.

How to Start Your Journey

Jesus loves you, right now, as you are. You don’t need to scrub your life clean or memorize a rulebook. He hung out with the messiest people, liars, cheaters, outcasts, and loved them into transformation. He’s inviting you to know Him, no strings attached.

Here’s how to start:

Believe in Him: Trust that Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection are for you. That’s the door to a relationship with God. Talk to Him: Prayer is just you and Jesus chatting, pour out your heart, no fancy words needed. Learn about Him: Dive into the Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, John) to see His life and love in action. Find His people: Surround yourself with folks who live out His love, not just talk about it.

Jesus said, “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another” (John 13:34). And the greatest commandments? “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind… and love your neighbor as yourself” (Matthew 22:37,39). That’s the heartbeat of following Him.

A Promise to Hold Onto

Jesus said, “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16). Whether you’re like the woman caught in sin, whom Jesus defended (John 8:1,11), or the thief on the cross, who believed in his final moments, you’re never too far from His love.
